We offer top notch bookkeeping for brand and web designers who think big. Most importantly, we're here to make your numbers accessible and understandable. Curious about working with us? Come take a peek!
Can you do your own bookkeeping without being a “numbers person,” a finance expert, or someone who secretly enjoys spreadsheets? Yes. Genuinely. If bookkeeping feels harder than it should, it’s usually not because you’re doing it wrong — it’s because you’ve been handed a few beliefs about how this is supposed to work, and most of them aren’t true.
I’ve spent six years working with hundreds of creative business owners — designers, copywriters, educators — cleaning up books, answering the same questions, and watching capable people convince themselves they’re “bad at this.” They’re not. They’re just carrying around a handful of myths that make bookkeeping feel ten times more complicated than it actually is.
So let’s take them apart. Here are the five I see most often, and what’s actually true instead.
No. You do not need to become a bookkeeper to do your own bookkeeping.
This is the big one, especially for the perfectionists. The belief goes: before I can touch my own books, I need to understand all the terminology, take a course, get certified, or at least fall down enough YouTube rabbit holes to feel qualified.
You don’t. You need two things: a repeatable system, and a way to catch and fix mistakes when they happen. That’s the entire job. You don’t need to know what “accrual basis” means to categorize a Stripe payout. And waiting until you feel like an expert isn’t caution — it’s the thing keeping your books undone month after month. (If you want a no-jargon place to start, here’s my free guide to categorizing your expenses — it’s the on-ramp, not the whole highway.)
No — and an elaborate spreadsheet might actually be working against you.
Spreadsheets can work. But they also leave a lot of room for human error. One wrong number in one cell, one broken formula, one transaction you meant to paste in and didn’t, one accidental duplicate — and your numbers are quietly lying to you. The worst part is you often don’t know they’re wrong until much later, when you’re trying to make a real decision based on them.
This is why I recommend bookkeeping software like Xero instead. It pulls your transactions in automatically, dramatically reduces the margin for error, and turns “rebuild my spreadsheet” into “spend twenty minutes reviewing what’s already there.” You didn’t start a creative business to become a part-time spreadsheet engineer.
No. Consistency comes from a system, not from handing the whole thing off.
Here’s the logic trap: the only way I’ll actually keep up with this is if someone else does it for me. And yes — if your bookkeeping isn’t getting done at all, something genuinely needs to change. But “hire someone to take it completely off my plate” isn’t the only fix. Usually what’s missing isn’t a bookkeeper. It’s a routine.
When you have a clear, repeatable system, bookkeeping becomes something you sit down and finish in a defined window of time — not a vague, looming dread that follows you around. And when you’re actually looking at your numbers consistently, you make better decisions, you spot problems early, and you’re never scrambling the week before a deadline. (Speaking of: here’s every 2026 tax deadline in one place so consistency is easier to keep.)
This one has a kernel of truth — setup is the hardest part. But you don’t have to do it alone.
I’ll be honest with you here, because this is the myth I half-agree with. Setting up your bookkeeping system — especially inside software — is the steepest part of the entire learning curve. It means connecting your bank accounts and payment processors like Stripe and PayPal, building a chart of accounts that actually fits how your business makes and spends money, bringing in the transactions your bank feed doesn’t automatically pull, and making sure everything reconciles accurately from day one.
It’s a lot. And here’s the kicker: you only have to do it once.
So spending hours white-knuckling through the hardest, most technical part of the process — alone, at night, second-guessing every step — usually isn’t the best use of your time. This is exactly why we offer done-for-you Xero setup. We build the whole thing correctly from the start, and then you simply maintain it going forward. The scary part gets handled, and you step into a system that’s already working.
No. Doing it yourself was never supposed to mean doing it alone.
This is the sneaky one — the myth I think costs people the most. The belief that if you’re DIY-ing your bookkeeping, you’re on your own. That it’s a binary: either you white-knuckle it completely solo, or you pay someone $600+ a month to take it over entirely.
There’s a third option almost nobody puts in front of you. Most people don’t need someone to do their bookkeeping for them forever. They need a system, a second set of eyes, and a place to ask questions when something doesn’t make sense. That combination is what actually builds confidence — and it’s the entire reason I built the Monthly Book(keeping) Club. You keep your hands on your own numbers. You just stop doing it in a vacuum.
If you read those and felt called out by one (or, hi, all five) — you’re not behind, and you’re not bad at this. You were just handed some beliefs that made this harder than it needed to be. Set them down. Bookkeeping doesn’t have to be something you dread or avoid. It can be something you understand, stay on top of, and — dare I say — feel a little proud of.
If you want the supported version of that, the Monthly Book(keeping) Club gives you the system, the second set of eyes, and the place to ask questions — for $199/month, with done-for-you Xero setup available when you join. It’s DIY, minus the part where you’re doing it alone.
You’ve got this. And if you’d like, you’ve got us too. 🌿
